The confrontation led to a melee behind the goals, requiring intervention from other players before a free kick was awarded.

Following the incident, Rioli missed a training session on April 15, 2025, and the club confirmed that his leave is not expected to be long-term.

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell expressed a desire to discuss the situation with Rioli privately, reflecting on their long-standing relationship from their time at West Coast.

In their official statement, Port Adelaide emphasized their support for Rioli, acknowledging the deep emotional pain his family carries due to past experiences with the club.

During the Gather Round match against Hawthorn on April 14, 2025, Rioli scored a double goal after a confrontation with defender Changkuoth Jiath, which escalated into a melee.

Rioli's negative feelings towards Hawthorn are rooted in personal history, including his late father's unfulfilled career with the club and a legal dispute involving his cousin over racism allegations.

A club spokesman stated that while there is no set timeframe for Rioli's return, they expect him back within the week and are providing ongoing support.
