Deezer Blocks AI Music from Recommendations Amidst Legal Battles and Surging Uploads
April 16, 2025
Market projections suggest that the global AI in music market could expand dramatically, from $4 billion in 2023 to $39 billion by 2033, indicating a robust annual growth rate.
Deezer has reported a significant surge in AI-generated music, with 18% of all new uploads now being fully AI-created, translating to over 20,000 songs daily, up from just 10% three months ago.
To enhance transparency, Deezer has introduced a tool that flags tracks as 'IA Generated,' allowing users to distinguish between human-made and AI-created music.
Despite this growth, concerns are mounting regarding the use of copyrighted material by AI companies for training their models, leading to ongoing lawsuits from major labels against platforms like Suno and Udio.
This detection tool not only identifies AI-generated content but also sets a potential industry standard for tracking such music in the future.
Alexis Lanternier, Deezer's director-general, expressed optimism about the exponential growth of AI-generated music, attributing it to the user-friendly tools available for music creation.
However, Deezer acknowledges that most listeners still prefer music created by human artists, which presents a challenge for the acceptance of AI-generated content in the market.
In response to these developments, Deezer has committed to excluding AI-generated tracks from its algorithmic and editorial recommendations to safeguard human musicians' revenue and visibility.
While AI-generated music will remain in Deezer's library, it will not be included in automatic suggestions, promoting transparency for listeners.
Following the implementation of an artist-centric payment model in partnership with Universal Music Group, Deezer has removed over 26 million tracks deemed 'useless' from its platform.
Deezer stands out as the only streaming platform to endorse a global statement against the unauthorized use of copyrighted music for AI training, emphasizing its commitment to protecting artists' rights.
In contrast, Spotify has not developed a tool to track AI-generated music, with CEO Daniel Ek stating that such tracks are acceptable as long as they do not imitate real artists.
