Easter Weekend Swell: NSW Beaches Close Amid Dangerous Surf and Massive Waves
April 18, 2025
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued hazardous swell warnings for all New South Wales beaches, urging beachgoers to stay out of the water and avoid surf-exposed areas.
Surf Life Saving NSW has echoed these warnings, particularly cautioning those planning to surf or engage in rock fishing during the Easter long weekend.
A significant swell of up to four meters is expected to impact the Sydney coastline on April 18 and 19, 2025, coinciding with an unusually warm long weekend.
On this day, several Sydney beaches, including Coogee Beach, were closed due to dangerous surf conditions, with waves reaching heights of 4.6 meters.
The Randwick City Council confirmed closures at multiple beaches, including Coogee, Bondi, and Maroubra, due to extremely dangerous conditions.
These large waves pose a risk of beach erosion and complicate safety efforts for lifeguards and rescue services, especially with many visitors expected.
The hazardous conditions are anticipated to persist until Saturday, driven by a deep low pressure system in the Tasman Sea following ex-tropical cyclone Tam.
Meteorologist Jiwon Park reported that waves as high as five meters were observed on the NSW north coast the previous night, with four-meter swells reaching Sydney on Friday morning.
Despite the closures, a large crowd gathered at Coogee Beach to watch the massive waves, with footage showing beachgoers sitting on the shore as waves crashed in.
Some daredevil surfers took advantage of the conditions, riding the large waves while sea foam splashed over nearby Wedding Cake Island.
Surf Life Saving NSW's CEO, Steve Pearce, emphasized the importance of safety, advising against mixing alcohol and drugs with water activities during the holiday period.
Looking ahead, a cold front is expected to bring cooler and wetter weather to Sydney starting April 21, 2025, with a potential risk of thunderstorms lasting until mid-week.
