The UK's F-35B Lightning jets are embarking on a significant mission to the Indo-Pacific, joining the Royal Navy flagship HMS Prince of Wales as part of Carrier Strike Group 25 on Operation Highmast.
This deployment involves approximately 4,000 military personnel, including 2,500 from the Royal Navy, 592 from the Royal Air Force, and 900 soldiers from the British Army.
The carrier will lead a multinational fleet visiting around 40 countries, covering regions such as the Mediterranean, Middle East, South-East Asia, Japan, and Australia.
Commodore James Blackmore emphasized that the deployment aims to support key trade routes and allies in the Indo-Pacific, reinforcing the UK's commitment to global security and NATO.
Armed forces minister Luke Pollard noted that this mission serves as a platform for promoting UK exports and jobs while strengthening international alliances during uncertain times.
The deployment will feature 16 Merlin and Wildcat helicopters, as well as T-150 Malloy and Puma drones, enhancing the UK's military capabilities.
The F-35B jets are versatile combat aircraft capable of air superiority and strike missions, with advanced features allowing for vertical or short take-off and landing.
As families bid farewell to their loved ones, emotions ran high, with some viewing the deployment as a source of pride while others felt the weight of goodbyes.
Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan expressed pride in the city's role in military operations, highlighting the significance of the deployment for community members saying goodbye.
The squadrons consist of personnel from both the RAF and Royal Navy, showcasing integration with 617 Squadron led by Royal Marine Lieutenant Colonel Mike Carty for the first time.
The Indo-Pacific region is crucial for UK trade, with nearly 20% of all UK trade valued at £286 billion passing through, making this deployment vital for economic engagement.
In a gesture of respect, the ensign on the flight deck of HMS Prince of Wales was flown at half-mast in memory of the late Pope.
