Fitbit Recalls Smartwatches: Overheating Risk Prompts Firmware Update and Compensation Offer
April 3, 2025
Fitbit has announced a recall of its popular smartwatches, specifically the Fitbit Sense and Fitbit Versa 3, due to overheating batteries that pose a burn risk.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) reported that a firmware update is necessary to address this overheating battery issue.
This firmware update will implement a new battery management system designed to reduce the risk of overheating and improve battery stability.
Fitbit has confirmed that the update can be installed remotely, meaning consumers do not need to return their devices to receive the fix.
While the update will mitigate the overheating risk, it will result in shorter battery life, requiring more frequent charging for affected models.
The recall affects devices sold between August 1, 2020, and September 30, 2023, including the Fitbit Sense (model number FB512) and Fitbit Versa 3 (model number FB511).
Consumers can check if their device is affected by submitting a request through Fitbit's support page.
Affected consumers may also have the right to request a refund or replacement from the ACCC, with payment requests needing to be made before January 21, 2026.
Owners of affected models may be eligible for a compensatory payment of $80 in Australia, or $50 in the US, if certain conditions are met.
Consumers have rights to remedies under consumer guarantees, which could include a refund or replacement.
It is important to note that not all devices sold during the recall period are impacted by the overheating issue.
Consumers do not need to return their devices to receive the firmware update, and they may be eligible for compensation from Fitbit if affected.
