Worldcoin Launches Orb Mini in US: Iris Scanning for AI Differentiation and Cryptocurrency Expansion
May 1, 2025
World has announced a partnership with Visa to introduce a 'World Visa card' that will enable payments using WLD and other cryptocurrencies for users who complete the eye-scanning process.
In addition to the verification device, World is expanding its financial services with the introduction of a DeFi lending platform, Morpho Mini App, and a prediction market platform in collaboration with Kalshi.
To enhance privacy, World has implemented a personal custody feature that ensures users' biometric data remains on their devices and is not stored by the company.
The company plans to produce 7,500 units of the new Orb Mini by the end of the year, with a factory being established in Richardson, Texas, to support this production.
Starting May 1, 2025, U.S. residents can register for the World ID using the Orb, marking a significant step in the project's rollout.
Sam Altman emphasized the importance of human authentication in an era dominated by AI, highlighting the project's goal to distinguish human-generated content from that produced by machines.
World has launched a mobile verification device called the Orb Mini, designed to differentiate human users from AI entities online.
The project, formerly known as Worldcoin, has recently expanded its operations in the U.S., launching in six cities including Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, and San Francisco.
The verification process involves scanning users' irises to create a World ID, which acts as a 'digital passport' and takes about 30 seconds to complete.
As of now, World has nearly 26 million registrants globally, with 12 million verified users, primarily in Latin America and Asia, and is seeking to grow its presence in the U.S.
This expansion comes at a favorable regulatory time for cryptocurrency in the U.S. under the Trump Administration, which has shifted the political climate to be more supportive of digital currencies.
Users who verify their identity can receive free Worldcoin (WLD) tokens, which can be utilized on various platforms like Minecraft, Reddit, and Discord.
