Severe Storms Batter Sydney and Central Coast: Floods, Power Outages, and Road Closures Rampant
May 18, 2025
Severe weather has wreaked havoc across Sydney and the Central Coast of New South Wales, resulting in uprooted trees, closed roads, and widespread power outages due to heavy rain and strong winds.
Officials from the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) have warned that the risk of significant flooding and road closures will continue as heavy rain persists over several days.
In some areas of the Central Coast, over 100mm of rain has fallen, with Wyee receiving 121mm and Dora Creek 117mm, while northern Sydney recorded up to 70mm.
The current weather system is expected to last until May 24, 2025, bringing heavy rainfall and dangerous surf conditions, with isolated areas potentially receiving up to 180mm of rain in just 24 hours.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued severe weather warnings for the Mid North Coast, Hunter region, and Sydney, predicting winds that could exceed 100 km/h alongside heavy rainfall.
On the night of May 17, 2025, the SES received over 350 calls for assistance, including 60 from metropolitan Sydney, as incidents of property damage and flooding increased.
Emergency responders conducted seven flood rescues overnight in Northern NSW, particularly in Gosford and Wyong, successfully retrieving all individuals from the floodwaters.
Emergency crews have been busy responding to various incidents, including a tree that fell on a car on Taronga Road in Terrey Hills, which required road clearance.
Flash flooding has already affected major routes such as the Wakehurst Parkway and The Esplanade, prompting authorities to advise motorists to seek alternative routes.
In Clontarf, downed power lines caused by fallen trees have left over 2,200 residents without electricity across Sydney and the Central Coast.
