Dermatologist's €51K Day Sparks Probe into Portugal's Health System Practices
May 26, 2025
The Inspeção-Geral das Atividades em Saúde (IGAS) has launched an inquiry into additional surgical activities within the Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS) following a case involving a dermatologist who reportedly earned €51,000 in a single day at Hospital de Santa Maria.
Reports indicate that this dermatologist earned €400,000 for additional work over ten Saturdays in 2024, which included procedures on benign lesions for his own parents.
Martins, a prominent figure in the health sector, expressed that such incidents undermine public confidence, particularly among those awaiting surgeries or consultations.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa confirmed that the Public Ministry has opened an inquiry and that the Health Inspectorate is actively investigating the situation.
The administration of Hospital de Santa Maria has requested a detailed report on the incident, and the next government will decide on further actions based on the findings.
Martins cautioned against speculation, emphasizing that uncertainty could exacerbate unrest among health professionals and institutions.
The Minister of Health acknowledged the seriousness of the case but urged caution against generalizing the issue to all healthcare professionals.
In response to the situation, IGAS has initiated an audit of 39 local health units and three oncology institutes to investigate compliance with regulations.
The investigation is particularly focused on the Sistema Integrado de Gestão de Inscritos para Cirurgia (SIGIC), which allows surgeries to be performed outside regular hours to alleviate waiting lists.
Allegations have emerged that some health professionals may be improperly benefiting from additional surgical activities intended to reduce waiting times.
Carlos Cortes, president of the Medical Association, stated that they first learned of the situation through media reports and have since sought clarification from ULS Santa Maria.
The case highlights the need for a review of the remuneration and oversight systems for doctors working outside regular hours.
