NSW Unveils Major Reforms to Tackle $2 Billion Cyber-Scam Crisis
May 7, 2025
These new measures are designed to empower government agencies to prevent criminals from misusing personal information to apply for financial benefits or services.
Digital Government Minister Jihad Dib highlighted that this legislation will enhance protection for vulnerable citizens against identity theft and cybercrime.
In response to over $2 billion lost to cyber-scams in Australia during 2024, the NSW government is implementing significant reforms to combat identity fraud.
A key component of these reforms is ID Support NSW, which was launched in late 2021 and will serve as the primary provider of identity protection services, notifying residents of data breaches and assisting in the replacement of compromised documents.
On May 7, 2025, the Identity Protection and Recovery Bill will be introduced, creating a fraud check service for verifying compromised identity documents.
As part of this initiative, a Compromised Credential Register will be established to alert individuals and agencies when a stolen or compromised ID document is used.
This new system aims to improve the early detection of identity theft, enabling quicker notifications to both affected individuals and relevant authorities.
