Hajj 2025 Begins: AI Enhances Safety Amid Heat Risks as Pilgrims Flock to Mecca
June 2, 2025
On June 4, 2025, the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage for Muslims, will officially commence in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, with thousands of pilgrims already arriving to perform rituals.
As of today, many pilgrims are engaging in 'tawaf', the ritual circumambulation around the Kaaba in the Grand Mosque, highlighting the spiritual significance of the event.
The Saudi Ministry of Health has reported 44 cases of heatstroke, underscoring the health risks associated with the extreme temperatures expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius during the pilgrimage.
Last year, over 1,300 pilgrims died due to heat-related issues, prompting Saudi authorities to implement additional safety measures for this year's event.
To enhance safety and manage the flow of pilgrims, the Saudi government is utilizing artificial intelligence, drones, and high-tech surveillance systems, including AI-enabled cameras and ground sensors.
Over 250,000 officials from 40 government agencies have been mobilized to ensure safety and mitigate heat-related risks during the Hajj.
Enhanced safety measures include the introduction of virtual glasses and smart cameras for security inspections, as well as AI-based emergency response software to improve coordination.
Facial recognition systems have been implemented to monitor crowd density effectively, further enhancing security and organization during the pilgrimage.
Each pilgrim will use a Digital Nusuk Card, which serves as a smart ID containing personal details, medical records, and accommodation information, streamlining access to services.
AI-powered mobile apps, such as Manara 2, will provide real-time information and support in multiple languages, while AI-powered robots will assist with guidance and religious education.
The Nusuk platform has been established as the official method for booking Hajj packages and obtaining visas, with strict regulations against using third-party agencies.
In an effort to prevent unauthorized pilgrims, authorities have turned away nearly 270,000 individuals without proper permits since the start of the pilgrimage.
