Fourth Arrest in North London Arson Case, Investigation Explores Potential Kremlin Links
June 2, 2025
An investigation led by the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command has been initiated following a series of arson incidents in North London, including a fire at Prime Minister Keir Starmer's family residence on May 12, 2025.
A fourth man, aged 48, was arrested at Stansted Airport on June 2, 2025, on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life, in connection with these incidents.
Three other men have already been charged in connection with two fires that occurred in Kentish Town, north London, on May 12, 2025.
One of the suspects, Carpiuc, was arrested at Luton Airport while attempting to fly to Romania and has denied involvement in the fires during court proceedings.
Carpiuc, who has lived in the UK for nine years and recently completed a business studies degree, is currently employed in construction in east London.
Pochynok and Carpiuc are accused of conspiring to commit arson with intent to endanger life, while a third suspect, Lavrynovych, has been remanded in custody since his arrest.
The investigation has been led by counterterrorism detectives due to the involvement of the prime minister, with officials exploring potential Kremlin links to the suspects.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has denied any Russian involvement in the attacks, dismissing reports suggesting such links.
Starmer condemned the fires as an attack on democracy and the values upheld in society, emphasizing their broader implications.
Local residents expressed shock at the arson attacks, recounting frightening experiences and describing scenes of fire and chaos in their neighborhood.
Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of wider community involvement in these incidents, while remaining open-minded about the motive behind the attacks.
Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the police, quoting CAD 441/12 May, as inquiries continue.
