UK Faces Motorcaravan Parking Crunch as Post-Brexit Travel Spurs Domestic Demand
June 23, 2025
The Campaign for Real Aires (Campra) is advocating for increased overnight parking options for motorhomes and campervans in the UK, driven by a surge in demand following post-Brexit travel restrictions.
These post-Brexit regulations limit UK passport holders to 90 days in the Schengen area within a 180-day period, leading many motorcaravan users to explore domestic travel alternatives.
With over 416,000 motorcaravans registered in the UK, there is a significant market for overnight parking facilities.
A recent survey revealed that 88% of motorcaravan users are dissatisfied with the availability of overnight parking in desirable UK locations.
Motorcaravan users contribute an average of £51 per day to local businesses and spend £23 nightly on parking or campsite fees, underscoring their economic impact.
Local councils are responsible for determining policies regarding overnight motorcaravan parking, with some successfully implementing permanent solutions after trial periods.
Campra has pointed out the lack of infrastructure and welcoming attitudes in the UK compared to continental Europe, which boasts more established motorhome facilities.
Recently, Hampshire County Council banned overnight stays for campervans and motorhomes at Keyhaven, citing the need to maintain order, a move that Campra argues could negatively affect local businesses.
Campra's managing director, Steve Haywood, highlighted the economic benefits of accommodating motorcaravans, referencing Fleetwood, Lancashire, where a £5 per night parking fee has significantly boosted local revenue.
The success seen in Fleetwood demonstrates that low-cost overnight parking can enhance local business revenue and lead to the establishment of permanent facilities.
The growing demand for overnight parking options reflects a broader trend in the UK as more travelers seek domestic alternatives in light of new travel restrictions.
