Sydney Bans Gas Appliances in New Homes, Paves Way for Fully Electric Future by 2027
June 24, 2025
According to independent research presented to the council, this policy aims to save each household an average of $626 per year on power bills.
On June 19, 2025, the City of Sydney voted to ban gas appliances in all new homes, marking it as the seventh council in New South Wales to adopt such measures, effective January 1, 2026.
This decision follows similar bans already enacted by six other councils in New South Wales, including Hornsby Shire and the City of Newcastle.
Under the new development control rules, developers will be required to install electric cooktops, ovens, and heating and cooling systems in newly constructed residential buildings, while gas hot water systems will still be allowed temporarily.
Plans are in place to transition all new homes, offices, and serviced apartments to be fully electric by 2027.
The City of Sydney intends to consult the public on expanding these electrification requirements to cover all appliances, including hot water systems, in new homes.
The initiative is projected to save new households an average of $626 annually on energy bills and reduce up to 1.7 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over the next 40 years.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore emphasized that this decision aligns with the city's goal of transitioning to all-electric buildings, enhancing both energy efficiency and health benefits.
The ban supports environmental goals, as gas is recognized as a dirty fossil fuel that contributes to emissions and health issues.
Although the New South Wales government has not yet implemented a statewide policy, the increasing trend of local councils adopting electrification measures is putting pressure on the government for broader reforms.
Medical professionals, including neurologists, have endorsed the ban, citing health concerns associated with gas appliances that can lead to respiratory issues and childhood asthma.
Health experts, such as neurologist Shaun Watson, have pointed out the harmful effects of gas emissions, including nitrogen dioxide and formaldehyde, which are known triggers for asthma in children.
