Ransomware Attack on Synnovis: Cybercrime Disrupts NHS Hospitals, Linked to Patient Death
June 25, 2025
The attack led to the cancellation of over 10,000 appointments across two major NHS trusts, significantly impacting patient care.
Among the reported incidents, there was one case of severe harm and 14 cases of moderate harm, highlighting the attack's serious implications for patient safety.
As a direct consequence of the attack, NHS Trusts had to rely on O-type blood universally, leading to a national shortage and prompting calls for increased blood donations.
A government spokesperson emphasized that this incident serves as a stark reminder of the serious threats posed by cyber attacks to critical infrastructure in the UK.
In light of the attack, there are increasing calls for an independent inquiry into the NHS's cybersecurity, underscoring the healthcare sector's vulnerability to cybercrime.
Mark Dollar, CEO of Synnovis, expressed deep sorrow over the attack's impact on the patient's death and extended condolences to the family involved.
King’s College Hospital Foundation Trust confirmed that the patient's death was linked to delays caused by the attack, although multiple factors contributed to the incident.
In June 2024, a ransomware attack by the Qilin cybercrime group on Synnovis, a pathology service, severely disrupted blood testing in several NHS hospitals in London, ultimately contributing to a patient's death.
The South East London Integrated Care Board reported that approximately 170 patients experienced harm due to the cyber attack, with most incidents classified as 'low harm'.
The Qilin group not only disrupted services but also stole and published nearly 400GB of sensitive data, affecting over 900,000 individuals, including personal information of patients with serious health conditions.
Despite the breach, affected patients have not yet been notified about the exposure of their data, although Synnovis has indicated that an investigation is nearing completion.
In addition to the Synnovis incident, two other cyberattacks on NHS facilities in 2024 have raised concerns about risks to patient safety, particularly regarding cancer treatments.
