Severe Thunderstorm Alert: Henderson County Braces for Flash Floods and Lightning Strikes

On June 29, 2025, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a severe thunderstorm alert for Henderson County, predicting strong thunderstorms with wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea-sized hail.
Drivers are advised to slow down to avoid hydroplaning and to be cautious of frequent lightning strikes associated with the storm.
Impacted locations include Southern Pines, Rockingham, Raeford, Pinehurst, Hamlet, Aberdeen, Hoffman, Pinebluff, Ellerbe, and Foxfire, with the NWS urging those outdoors to seek shelter.
The storm is also affecting areas along Interstate 95, particularly between mile markers 187 and 198, including Dillon, Bingham, Hamer, and South Of The Border.
In addition, locations such as Saint James City, San Carlos Park, Cape Coral, and Fort Myers are experiencing severe weather conditions.
The alert was initially issued at 8:40 PM and is effective until 9:15 PM, with the storm tracked moving south at 5 mph.
Forecasts indicate that the storm is moving southeast at approximately 15 miles per hour, with severe impacts expected in areas like Safe Harbor and Coryville around 8:30 PM.
By 8:34 PM, Doppler radar indicated strong thunderstorms impacting central Lee County, particularly near Iona, southeast of Cape Coral.
Meteorologist Ethan Houston reported that thunderstorms have already generated up to 1.5 inches of rain, with an additional 1 to 1.5 inches expected, leading to flash flooding concerns.
A flash flood warning has been issued, signifying that a flash flood is imminent or occurring, requiring immediate action to move to higher ground.
While a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been canceled for nine counties, it remains in effect for several others until the specified time.
A slow-moving thunderstorm is currently impacting southern Lancaster County, particularly near Millersville and Willow Street.
