Starting in July 2025, Australia's minimum wage will increase by 3.5% to $24.95 per hour, as determined by the Fair Work Commission.

This adjustment will raise the new weekly minimum wage to $948, reflecting an increase from the previous rate.

If approved, the new minimum hourly wage would reach $25.18, leading to an annual salary increase of $2,143 for full-time workers, bringing their total to $49,770.

The decision comes as inflation has significantly decreased from a peak of 7.8% in late 2022, indicating that inflationary pressures on the economy are easing.

Fair Work Commission president Adam Hatcher emphasized the importance of considering living standards, workforce participation, and gender equality in this wage decision.

The Commission noted that many employees relying on these wages have struggled to meet their everyday needs due to previous wage stagnation.

Hatcher further stated that the wage increase is crucial for helping workers recover the real income lost during periods of high inflation.

Approximately 2.6 million low-wage workers will benefit from this increase, which aims to alleviate the financial strain caused by rising living costs.

The Australian government supports this wage increase to prevent further declines in workers' wages amid ongoing economic challenges.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) has welcomed the wage increase as a positive step for minimum wage employees who were heavily impacted by post-COVID inflation.

Overall, this marks the first official wage hike for the lowest-paid workers in four years, addressing the economic challenges faced during that time.

ACTU Secretary Sally McManus remarked that this increase will significantly assist workers in managing their everyday expenses and help them advance financially.
