Scientists at the University of Portsmouth are collaborating with ABL 1 Touch and Innovate UK to develop an AI tool designed to assess car damage after accidents and streamline repair processes.

This initiative aims to support major UK insurance companies and vehicle fleet providers, enhancing operational efficiency in the motor insurance claims sector.

The project, which has received joint funding of £560,000, focuses on creating an AI-powered system that improves damage assessment and repair scheduling for ABL 1 Touch.

ABL 1 Touch is responding to a significant increase in claims payouts, which reached £11.7 billion in 2024, a 17% rise from the previous year, by enhancing its operational capacity.

Graham Roberts from ABL 1 Touch emphasized the importance of scalable solutions to reduce reliance on individual assessments and improve data processing in the fast-paced vehicle repair market.

He also highlighted the need for innovative solutions to effectively manage the diverse types of vehicle damage and optimize repair scheduling.

The partnership is expected to give ABL 1 Touch a competitive advantage in automated repair assessment, allowing for expansion from 29 to over 60 repair sites.

As part of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership Programme, this project aims to enhance ABL 1 Touch's service capabilities and address industry pressures for improved service delivery.

Professor Mohammed Bader noted that the AI system will set a 'technical benchmark' for the industry by integrating machine learning and computer vision with engineering expertise.

Over the next three years, researchers will work on this innovative system, establishing new standards for the vehicle repair industry.

Graham Roberts also mentioned that the tool will standardize damage assessments across the industry, further enhancing ABL 1 Touch's competitive edge.
