Labor MP Pat Conroy, acting as defence minister, acknowledged that the Australian Defence Force (ADF) is prepared for potential Chinese observation of the ongoing military exercises and emphasized the importance of managing intelligence leaks.

Australian Navy operations are increasingly conducted near China due to trade routes and sea lines of communication, contrasting with China's proximity to Australia.

Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles stated that Chinese military ships have historically observed these exercises, and it would be unusual if they did not do so this time.

The ADF is participating in the Talisman Sabre exercises, which involve over 30,000 personnel from Australia, the US, and 19 partner nations, running from July 14 to August 4, 2025.

Marles also noted that while China is not currently spying on Australian war drills, it cannot be ruled out in the near future.

Marles emphasized the importance of the Royal Australian Navy's presence in the South China Sea and surrounding areas, advocating for adherence to a rules-based order in dealings with China.

Conroy pointed out that countries often observe military exercises to gather intelligence on procedures and communications, and the ADF will adjust its operations accordingly.
