Port of Dover Prepares for Massive Summer Traffic Surge with New AI and Staffing Measures
July 24, 2025
The Port of Dover is bracing for a significant influx of traffic, expecting nearly 40,000 cars this weekend and over 270,000 vehicles in the following six weeks.
In preparation for the busy summer season, Doug Bannister, CEO of the Port of Dover, highlighted measures taken to minimize disruption, including boosted staff levels and enhanced traffic management.
Additionally, the port has introduced AI-powered forecasting and additional welfare facilities to improve the travel experience for holidaymakers and freight lorries alike.
Currently, traffic is heavily congested at the Port of Dover as both holidaymakers and freight lorries arrive in large numbers, leading to delays of around one hour.
Vehicles are moving very slowly from the A20 down Jubilee Way towards the port, causing frustration among drivers.
Despite a traffic control system being in place to manage the situation, traffic wardens have reported instances of verbal abuse from frustrated drivers.
Eyewitness accounts from Thursday morning indicate that traffic wardens faced verbal abuse as they attempted to direct the heavy flow of traffic.
While Irish Ferries traffic is experiencing significant queues, services from P&O Ferries and DFDS are reportedly flowing more smoothly.
Looking ahead, new digital border checks will be implemented from autumn 2025, requiring UK car passengers traveling to the Schengen area to exit their vehicles for fingerprint and photograph verification.
A spokesperson from the Port of Dover confirmed the implementation of a traffic control system to help manage the ongoing congestion.
Bannister emphasized the importance of keeping traffic moving, not only for holidaymakers but also for the benefit of the local community.
