4.8-Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Western Australia, No Major Damage Reported
July 30, 2025
A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck Wyalkatchem, a Wheatbelt town approximately 190 kilometers northeast of Perth, at around 2 a.m. on July 30, 2025.
This earthquake, recorded at a depth of five kilometers, is notable for being the largest in the Wyalkatchem area, surpassing a previous 4.5-magnitude quake.
Geoscience Australia reported that Wyalkatchem is one of the most seismically active regions in Australia, having recorded over 130 earthquakes in the past year.
Dr. Trevor Allen, a Senior Seismologist, characterized the earthquake as 'relatively strong' but unlikely to cause severe damage due to its remote location.
So far, there have been no reported injuries or significant damage from the earthquake, although minor damage to buildings is possible.
Local residents reported being awakened by the quake, with one worker noting that while it startled everyone, major damage was not expected.
Wyalkatchem resident Storm Pow described the quake as the largest she has felt, noting a loud rumble but no visible damage.
Another resident, Paige Dobson, echoed this sentiment, describing the earthquake as a 'loud rumble' that startled both people and pets.
Dr. Allen encouraged individuals who felt the earthquake to report their experiences on the Geoscience Australia website to assist emergency services.
Geoscience Australia has received over 400 reports from the public regarding the quake, with expectations for this number to rise.
Tremors from the earthquake were felt widely across the south-west and Wheatbelt regions of Western Australia, with over 670 residents reporting the sensation.
The earthquake was felt as far away as Fremantle, Perth, and Mandurah, highlighting its extensive reach across the region.
