TikTok Unveils New Safety Tools for Parents and Teens Amid Online Safety Act Debates
July 30, 2025
TikTok has introduced a suite of new safety features aimed at enhancing parental controls and protecting younger users on the platform.
Among these features is a family pairing setting that alerts parents when their teenagers post videos publicly, allowing for better monitoring of their online activity.
Additionally, parents can now see which accounts their teens have blocked, as well as their followers and who they follow.
Another significant addition is the 'Footnotes' feature, a crowd-sourced fact-checking system that allows users to provide context and verify claims made in videos.
This feature has already approved nearly 80,000 contributors, who can write and rate footnotes, with a moderation system that requires user approval for visibility.
TikTok continues to collaborate with professional fact-checking organizations, maintaining its Global Fact-checking Program while implementing Footnotes to enhance the accuracy of information.
The Footnotes system employs a bridging algorithm to find consensus among users with differing opinions, ensuring that notes rated as helpful are more likely to be accurate.
In terms of content moderation, TikTok claims to remove 98% of violative content before it is reported, utilizing advanced AI tools and a large team of safety professionals.
The platform has approximately 1.59 billion users, with 85% of content violations identified through automation, showcasing its proactive approach to safety.
Ali Law, TikTok's UK director of public policy, reiterated the company's commitment to improving online safety and the importance of parental involvement in navigating privacy settings.
These updates come amid ongoing debates about social media regulations, particularly concerning the UK's Online Safety Act, which aims to protect minors from harmful content.
As part of these safety measures, TikTok has implemented a daily screen time limit of 60 minutes for users under 18, along with restrictions on live features and virtual gifts.
