Ex-Police Officer Charged in Disturbing Child Abuse Material Case Across Sydney Childcare Facilities
July 31, 2025
David James, a 26-year-old former police officer from New South Wales, has been charged with producing child abuse material involving ten children aged five to six, while working at six after-school care facilities in northern Sydney from April 2021 to May 2024.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) allege that James produced this material over a three-year period, leading to charges of 13 offences, including nine counts of aggravated use of a child under 14 in making child abuse material.
James was initially arrested in October 2024 for refusing to provide police with passcodes to his devices, which led to the discovery of child abuse material and his subsequent rearrest.
During his employment as a probationary constable from December 2021 to September 2022, James failed to disclose his childcare work, continuing in a civilian role until his resignation in May 2023.
James has a history of working with children dating back to 2018, having held positions at 58 different after-school and vacation care services in Sydney, including Knox Grammar High School and YMCA.
The AFP confirmed that there is no evidence suggesting the abuse occurred at any facilities outside the identified six, and all impacted families have been contacted regarding the situation.
Authorities emphasize the seriousness of the allegations and the importance of protecting vulnerable children, committing to support affected families and continuing the investigation.
