Syracuse University has named Notre Dame transfer Steve Angeli as its starting quarterback for the 2025 season opener against Tennessee, replacing Rickie Collins after a competitive summer battle.

Angeli, a redshirt junior, transferred to Syracuse in May, bringing over 700 passing yards and ten touchdowns from his time at Notre Dame, where he played in 21 games and contributed to the team's run to the College Football Playoff.

His experience includes playing in three bowl games and one neutral-site regular-season game, making him the only Syracuse quarterback with bowl game experience.

Angeli's leadership, confidence, and familiarity with the team's schedule and environment made him the logical choice, especially given his previous college performance and leadership qualities.

He competed with LSU transfer Rickie Collins, a highly regarded four-star recruit, and ultimately won the starting role due to his greater experience and consistency.

While Angeli is set to start, Collins is expected to see playing time, given his perfect 7-for-7 passing record and dual-threat ability with strong running skills.

Angeli played a key role in the Orange Bowl semifinal against Penn State, including leading a significant drive in the first half, and previously played in the Orange Bowl last season when injured starter Riley Leonard was sidelined.

Notre Dame's Riley Leonard praised Angeli after the Orange Bowl, highlighting his readiness and ability to perform in critical moments.

Angeli's experience includes participating in three bowl games and one neutral-site game, making him uniquely experienced among Syracuse quarterbacks.

His game experience also includes completing 6 of 7 passes for 44 yards in the Orange Bowl when Leonard was injured.

Syracuse coach Fran Brown indicated the quarterback race was very close, with Collins slightly favored, but ultimately decided on Angeli due to his experience and previous performance.

Syracuse will face Notre Dame on November 22, with Angeli now leading the Orange in what will be a notable matchup.
