UN Launches 'Government Blockchain Academy' to Transform Public Service Transparency by 2026
September 16, 2025
The academy will be officially announced at TOKEN2049 in Singapore on October 1-2, 2025, with a roundtable involving industry leaders and government officials to coordinate efforts.
The United Nations is launching a 'Government Blockchain Academy' in 2026 to educate government officials on blockchain, AI, and emerging technologies, aiming to foster digital innovation and improve public service transparency.
Preparatory work, including curriculum design and stakeholder engagement, will begin in 2025, setting the stage for official country programs launching in 2026 to help governments adopt blockchain solutions.
The initiative aims to move beyond experimentation, offering practical solutions to enhance transparency, inclusion, and resilience in government operations through digital transformation.
The academy will focus on five main pillars: inclusive digital finance, transparent governance, supply chain integrity, climate resilience, and digital identity solutions, addressing various development challenges.
This effort coincides with rising global adoption of crypto and blockchain, especially in countries like India, Pakistan, and Vietnam, which are among the top adopters.
Partnerships include Bitget and UNICEF to promote blockchain literacy among youth in eight countries, supporting 300,000 young people over three years, and building on previous UNDP initiatives training staff on blockchain for sustainable growth.
The UNDP has previously trained around 22,000 staff across 170 countries in blockchain technology, aiming to empower policymakers and facilitate sustainable development.
Despite enthusiasm, countries face risks such as weak oversight and unclear regulations, which the UNDP seeks to address through clear guidelines emphasizing transparency and sustainability.
UN officials are exploring how crypto, stablecoins, and CBDCs can support human development by expanding financial inclusion and improving accountability through blockchain transparency.
The program will promote digital payments and financial services in unbanked communities, using blockchain to prevent fraud and misuse of funds through transparent transactions.
Key focus areas include creating trusted digital credentials, enhancing access to financial services, improving digital payments, and using blockchain for transparent public procurement and recordkeeping.
