United Airlines Expands at Newark, Adds 2,500 Jobs Amid Record On-Time Performance
September 16, 2025
United’s CEO Scott Kirby credited the airline’s progress to efforts by Newark staff and partnerships with authorities, emphasizing improvements in air traffic control and infrastructure as key factors.
United’s COO Toby Enqvist praised the Newark team for their resilience and responsibility in handling recent challenges, highlighting the airline’s commitment to operational excellence.
State and local officials, including New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, have praised United’s investments and job creation efforts, which are expected to boost regional economic growth.
United Airlines’ stock has shown strong performance, increasing nearly 8% this year and more than doubling over the past 12 months, reflecting investor confidence.
The airline has upgraded its fleet with Airbus A321neo aircraft featuring larger bins and better amenities, with six planes already in service from Newark and more scheduled to join over the next few years.
New routes are set to launch in fall and winter, including non-stop flights to Marrakesh, Chattanooga, and Columbia, as United continues to expand its Newark operations.
United Airlines is significantly expanding at Newark Airport, adding 2,500 new jobs and showcasing a strong recovery from earlier disruptions caused by air traffic control issues and runway construction.
The airport experienced its most reliable summer in history, with six million passengers flying on time, thanks to infrastructure upgrades like the end of runway construction and new fiber optic links connecting Newark with New York radar and communication systems.
In July, the FAA installed a new fiber optic network and increased staffing levels, which have contributed to the airport’s improved operational reliability.
This turnaround follows a period of disruptions in April and May due to technology outages that affected communication with air traffic controllers, leading to delays and cancellations.
Earlier challenges, including staffing shortages and technology failures, impacted operations but have since improved through early completion of runway work, FAA capacity limits, and upgraded air traffic control systems, restoring customer confidence.
Spring delays and operational issues at Newark were driven by equipment failures, staffing shortages, and ongoing runway construction, prompting investigations and targeted improvements.
The FAA has been actively enhancing Newark’s air traffic control system by deploying backup systems, upgrading technology, increasing staffing, and managing flight schedules to reduce delays.
