Tenerife to Conduct Major Volcanic Drill Amid Mount Teide Eruption Concerns
September 2, 2025
From September 22 to 26, Tenerife’s volcanic risk map will progressively change from green to yellow, orange, and red, culminating in a mock eruption alert at 9 a.m. on September 26.
Given the nearly 40% chance of eruption over the next 50 years, the government has implemented measures such as updated risk maps and mobility plans to enhance safety.
Seismic activity linked to Tenerife’s hydrothermal system is normal, and experts stress that it does not indicate magma movement, but the eruption risk remains significant over the coming decades.
Tenerife is preparing for a large-scale volcanic emergency drill on September 26, which will simulate an eruption of Mount Teide, involving evacuations and emergency response mobilization.
Residents will receive a telephone alert on September 26 at 9 a.m. to notify them of the simulated eruption.
Lucca D'Auria, director of volcanic monitoring at Involcan, states that current seismic activity is normal and does not suggest active magma movement, though the volcano remains dormant with potential to wake up.
The exercise is part of the EU’s MODEX project, monitored by European experts, and aims to improve volcanic emergency preparedness, with activities beginning September 22 and risk maps changing during the simulation.
Historical eruptions, such as the 1706 event that buried Garachico, highlight the importance of drills and preparedness for potential volcanic activity on Tenerife.
This drill is the first of its kind for a Spanish volcano, aiming to assess emergency response, with residents receiving mobile alerts and some being asked to evacuate their homes.
Recent seismic activity near Mount Teide, including shallow tremors, has raised concerns but is attributed to the island's hydrothermal system, not magma movement, and is considered normal.
Authorities emphasize that while Tenerife remains volcanically active, there is no imminent eruption risk, but the island is maintaining vigilance and preparedness.
Experts estimate the probability of a volcanic eruption in Tenerife within the next 50 years at approximately 39.3%, underscoring the need for increased risk awareness among residents.
