Ravichandran Ashwin has signed with Sydney Thunder, making him the first Indian male cricketer to join Australia's Big Bash League (BBL), with the official announcement made on September 25, 2025.

Since Ashwin did not participate in the BBL overseas player draft, he required a special exemption from Cricket Australia, similar to the one granted to Martin Guptill in 2022, which was successfully obtained.

This signing marks a historic moment as Ashwin becomes the first prominent Indian cricketer to participate in the BBL, facilitated by Cricket Australia's efforts to secure his inclusion.

The Sydney Thunder had a strong 2024-25 season, reaching the final under David Warner's leadership, with key contributions from Warner and Chris Green.

Ashwin's addition is expected to strengthen the Thunder's spin attack, complementing other spinners like Green, Tanveer Sangha, and Tom Andrews, especially suited to the team's strategy on slower pitches.

His ability to control middle overs and perform in powerplays, demonstrated by his IPL economy rate of 7.20, is seen as crucial for the team's success in the upcoming season.

Ashwin will join notable teammates including David Warner, Sam Konstas, Daniel Sams, and international players like Shadab Khan, Lockie Ferguson, and Sam Billings.
