A blaze at The Spit Marina in Mosman on Sydney’s lower north shore destroyed several large superyachts, with four people evacuated and one woman hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

Emergency services were alerted around 3:30am on Friday; four people were evacuated from the initial burning vessel and the hospitalized woman remained in stable condition.

A fourth yacht sustained significant damage but stayed afloat and will require assessment.

Firefighters and Port Authority personnel contained the fire and worked to manage hazardous materials, with hulls, fuel, and debris to be decontaminated and cleaned from the water.

Port Authority boats aided in combating the blaze and in removing oils and fuels to prevent water contamination, while hazmat procedures were prepared.

Around 40 firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW attended the scene to contain the blaze and prevent further spread.

Hazardous materials teams and Port Authority crews were on site to curb oils and fuels, with recovery operations expected to take time.

The Spit Marina is a premier anchorage for large yachts, including many over 30 metres, and the incident prompted the temporary closure of one lane of Spit Road.

The blaze occurred in a high-value, resident-laden marina environment, with vessels and occupants at risk, though authorities said the fire was not being treated as suspicious.
