Greece Unveils Daedalus: A 58.9M Euro Supercomputer to Boost National AI and Research
October 19, 2026
PHAROS, Greece’s national AI factory coordinated by GRNET, will leverage Daedalus’ power to help researchers, startups, SMEs, and public bodies develop AI applications in language and culture, health, and sustainability.
Daedalus, managed by GRNET, will support scientific simulations, large-scale data analysis, and AI development across fields like computational chemistry, physics, biology, biomedicine, and meteorology for universities, research centers, businesses, and public bodies.
Daedalus enables domestic AI model training, large-scale data processing, and secure handling of sensitive data within Greece, backing universities, research centers, businesses, public bodies, and health organizations.
The system was built by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) at a total cost of €36 million, with funding shared between EuroHPC JU (35%) and Greece’s Greece 2.0 National Recovery and Resilience Plan (65%).
Testing and technical adjustments were expected to follow the inauguration.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis framed the project as a long-term investment in Greece’s technological capabilities, urging infrastructure with lasting benefits and invoking a historical parallel to Themistocles’ naval development funded by silver revenues.
The Lavrio site is housed in a historic power plant at Lavrio’s industrial heritage, featuring a viewing enclosure for observing the supercomputer without disturbing the structure.
The project began in 2022, with agreements spanning 2023–2025; the system was tested, transported to Greece, and powered up in Lavrio by October 2026.
Greece unveiled Daedalus, its most powerful supercomputer to date, in Lavrio, following a €58.9 million investment, delivering 85.69 petaflops and earning a global ranking around 31st in TOP500 by mid-2026 and 23rd in the Green500.
The official inauguration occurred on October 19, 2026, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attending to back AI, research, and large-scale data analysis.
DAEDALUS achieved 85.69 petaflops and ranked 31st in the June 2026 TOP500, and 23rd on the Green500 list, according to EuroHPC JU.
Mitsotakis framed the project as a long-term investment in Greece’s technological capabilities, stressing that Greece’s competitive edge will be in practical applications rather than developing the most advanced AI models.
