Montana Grizzlies' Legendary Coach Bobby Hauck Retires, Citing Modern NCAA Challenges
February 5, 2026
Montana Grizzlies head coach Bobby Hauck announced his retirement after 14 seasons, leaving as the program’s all-time leader in wins (151) and Big Sky Conference victories (86).
He cited evolving NCAA rules, transfer dynamics, NIL compensation, agents, and player transience as central to his decision to step away, noting the modern landscape is no longer enjoyable for him.
Hauck stressed the move is about preserving his own enjoyment of coaching, saying the head-coaching role in today’s Division I football isn’t humane for him.
Despite his departure, Hauck and Athletics Director Kent Haslam expressed optimism for the program’s future and a commitment to keeping staff unity.
A press conference is set for 10 a.m. MT at the Adams Center to address the media with Hauck and Haslam.
Montana released its 2026 signing class and added transfers, signaling continuity and plans for the Grizzlies ahead of the era after Hauck.
Haslam said the timing of the decision is strategic, a sensible moment to begin a new school year, even though no time is universally ideal for such transitions.
Hauck informed Haslam on Tuesday night, told the coaching staff on Tuesday afternoon, and met players on Wednesday morning to discuss his decision.
Montana’s 2026 season opener is scheduled for late August, a Big Sky showdown against Southern Utah at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.
Hauck, a Montana native, is expected to be inducted into the Grizzly Sports Hall of Fame in the future.
Haslam publicly supported Hauck, thanking him for building a tremendous program and representing the university well.
Key 2025 players returned for 2026, including quarterback Keali'i Ah Yat and running back Eli Gillman, with Wortham set to be a senior.
