A suspicious death investigation is underway in Sebastian, Florida, after a body was found along the shoreline near 12900 Indian River Drive around 9 a.m. on Sunday, with authorities treating the case as suspicious.

Witnesses say a man fled from the Sebastian Police Department by jumping into the Indian River Lagoon during the incident.

The body was found around 9 a.m. on March 1 near the 12900 block of Indian River Drive in Indian River County and has been transported to the medical examiner’s office for autopsy.

The investigation is active and ongoing, with updates to be provided by WPTV and CBS12 as new information becomes available.

Authorities are treating the death as suspicious pending autopsy results expected to determine the cause of death after the scheduled autopsy this week.

Separately, a weather brief notes lingering showers with a dry-out later in the week and temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s.

Initial searches by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office did not locate the individual during an earlier chase.

The body has been transported to the medical examiner’s office in Fort Pierce for examination.

Officials believe the body may be connected to a Brevard County police chase that occurred several days earlier.

The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation and coordinating with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities have identified the deceased as an adult male and are treating the case as suspicious.

Police chase activity was reported earlier in Sebastian, with a white Kia Seltos traveling at high speed on U.S. 1 near Barber Street; the discovery may be linked to that incident.
