Hyundai Rotem and Poland Partner to Boost Local K2PL Tank Production and Defense Industry Growth
April 28, 2026
Industry observers note South Korea’s growing but still small share of the global defense market, with local production and technology transfer as key strategies for expanding K-defense in Europe.
The K2PL program aims to create a broader armored warfare ecosystem in Poland, aligning with Warsaw’s goals to replace legacy platforms with NATO-compatible, advanced systems.
The signing ceremony involved key executives, including Hyundai Rotem CEO Lee Yong-bae and Bumar CEO Monika Kruczek, underscoring high-level commitment to the project.
Hyundai Rotem and Poland’s BUMAR-LABEDY signed a cooperation agreement in Warsaw on April 27 to support local production and maintenance of the Polish K2PL main battle tank variant and armored recovery vehicles.
A central feature is the 'Polish Solution,' which aims to localize core components—such as front and rear surveillance cameras and inertial navigation systems—at Polish facilities to boost local defense industry competitiveness.
If Poland evolves into a K2 tank production hub, it could create long-term growth opportunities for Korea’s defense sector through joint participation in K2 export projects and overseas expansion, including Europe.
The K2PL variant is tailored to Polish and European requirements, with expected upgrades in armor, survivability, C2 systems and battlefield networking, and is designed to be adaptable for future upgrades.
