Italy Reclaims 337 Looted Artifacts in Landmark U.S. Partnership
April 29, 2026
Italy has recovered a haul of cultural artifacts that will be studied and, where possible, returned to their places of origin across the country, underscoring culture as a public good and national memory.
Many items were taken from clandestine digs or illicitly moved into the international art market, reflecting decades-long Italian efforts to combat illicit antiquities trafficking.
Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli emphasized the educational and cultural value of repatriation, linking memory, identity, and public enjoyment to the collaboration.
In one of the largest recent repatriations, Italy and the United States returned 337 looted antiquities, including archaeological finds, archival documents, and artworks, in a formal Rome ceremony.
The effort brings together multiple authorities, notably the FBI, in transnational efforts to recover Italian patrimony.
The artefacts span Roman, Greek, Etruscan, and Egyptian pieces, with many investigations centered in New York and 221 objects identified by the Manhattan DA.
These artifacts, showcased after investigations, include Roman and Greek sculptures, Etruscan and Egyptian pieces, and were displayed by Italy’s Carabinieri unit for cultural heritage protection.
Authorities anticipate more returns as tracing capabilities improve and cooperation with U.S. partners continues.
The U.S. ambassador to Italy reaffirmed commitment to returning artifacts and highlighted two decades of close cooperation in protecting cultural heritage.
A renewed Memorandum of Understanding (late 2025) tightens U.S. import restrictions on Italian archaeological material, strengthens customs controls, and expands information sharing between the two nations.
The artifacts were recovered through operations from late 2025 to early 2026 by Italy’s Carabinieri TPC in partnership with U.S. authorities, including the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, the FBI, and Homeland Security Investigations.
Cooperation between Italy and the U.S. has intensified, aided by online databases and closer collaboration, with the Manhattan DA's office identifying 221 objects in this haul.
