Perth's $22.8M James Street Revamp to Transform Northbridge into Cultural Hub by 2028
May 27, 2026
The City of Perth has approved a $22.8 million Final Concept Plan to revitalise James Street in Northbridge, turning it into a greener, safer, and more pedestrian-friendly entertainment corridor that supports local businesses and events.
Officials, led by the Lord Mayor, say the redevelopment will strengthen Northbridge’s role as a state cultural and entertainment destination, attract more visitors, and boost activity for local businesses and future investment.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2028 after the project moves from concept to detailed design, with more information available on the City of Perth website as part of the Long Term Financial Plan.
Independent assessments estimate the revitalisation will deliver about $53.5 million in economic, social, and environmental benefits over 20 years, roughly $3.20 in value for every dollar invested.
The plan includes added greenery and canopy, wider footpaths, upgraded lighting and paving, new public artworks and street furniture, and infrastructure to support temporary road closures for festivals and events.
Community and stakeholder engagement informed the Final Concept Plan, with strong support for improved lighting, safety, greening, maintenance, and celebrating Northbridge’s cultural diversity and history.
The City of Perth provides a link for the public to view the Final Concept Plan.
James Street will connect Russell Square, Northbridge Piazza, and the Perth Cultural Centre, reinforcing Northbridge as a central cultural and entertainment hub.
