Taskforce Hawk, formed to investigate criminal activity in the construction sector partly in response to investigative reporting by The Age, is leading the operation.

Gatto has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, framing himself as a mediator between builders and unions and suggesting he is being scapegoated because of his notoriety.

He has dismissed allegations that he damaged the building industry or Victorian economy through his mediator/arbitrator role between the CFMEU and construction firms, challenging investigators to prove misconduct.

The raid follows earlier, harsh findings from Geoffrey Watson SC that labeled Gatto a malignant influence in the sector and accused him of extortion and corruption.

As of now, no charges have been laid, but police say additional information will be released later in the day.

The investigation has been highlighted by investigative journalist Nick McKenzie of The Age, who has referenced previous reporting related to the case.

The Mount Martha operation is part of broader, multi-jurisdictional efforts against corruption in the construction industry, with related actions including a 2024 AFP raid on Gatto’s accountant tied to bribery and union influence.

Gatto has long argued that his notoriety makes him a target, calling himself the "biggest scapegoat in town" while offering to help authorities trace illicit cash.
