Ardea's Kalgoorlie Nickel Project Gains WA Lead Agency Status, Secures A$1 Billion Financing Boost
June 4, 2026
Ardea Resources’ Kalgoorlie Nickel Project Goongarrie Hub has been awarded Lead Agency Status by Western Australia’s Department of Energy and Economic Diversification, signaling streamlined state-level approvals and coordinated engagement across agencies.
This Lead Agency Status is intended to accelerate approvals and facilitate whole-of-government engagement for the Kalgoorlie project’s Goongarrie Hub.
Export Finance Australia and the U.S. Export-Import Bank have provided a conditional A$1 billion financing commitment, backing the project through a financing package.
Ardea has secured about A$1 billion in financing via a conditional letter of support from the Australian and U.S. export credit agencies.
The project already carries multiple endorsements, including Federal Major Project Status, inclusion in Canberra’s Investor Front Door initiative, and a high-level Australia–Japan critical minerals partnership statement.
Support from both WA and the Commonwealth governments reflects a broader regulatory and policy push to secure a stable supply of battery metals amid growing global demand.
Final investment decision is expected later this year as the definitive feasibility study nears completion, with Japanese partners funding up to about A$98.5 million for the study.
Goongarrie Hub holds 4 of the project’s 6.1 million tonnes of contained nickel and is jointly owned by Ardea and a consortium led by Sumitomo Metal Mining and Mitsubishi Corporation.
The Kalgoorlie Nickel Project features a large resource of 854 million tonnes at 0.71% nickel and 0.045% cobalt, totaling around 6.1 million tonnes of nickel and 386,000 tonnes of cobalt.
The Kalgoorlie project is led by a consortium including Sumitomo Metal Mining and Mitsubishi Corporation, with Japanese partners funding up to A$98.5 million as part of the definitive feasibility study.
Ardea’s CEO emphasizes that Lead Agency Status enables coordinated government engagement and supports advancing studies, approvals, and stakeholder engagement with whole-of-government support including the Commonwealth.
The designation recognizes the Goongarrie Hub as strategically important to Western Australia’s critical minerals and battery materials ambitions, aiming to streamline engagement across agencies.
