The Lawh Wa Qalam: M. F. Husain Museum at Qatar Foundation’s Education City in Doha has been named one of TIME World’s Greatest Places 2026, marking it as a top global cultural destination.

The museum houses over 150 works, including never-before-seen pieces from Husain’s Arab Civilization series, across paintings, sculpture, film, tapestry, photography, poetry, installations, and personal items.

Designed by Martand Khosla from Husain’s concept sketches, the building integrates with Education City to form a living gallery featuring public artworks, reflective spaces, and interactive exhibits that explore Husain’s connections to South Asia, Arab culture, and the Global South.

Kholoud M. Al-Ali, executive director of community engagement and programming at Qatar Foundation, says the recognition honors Husain’s legacy and fosters cross-cultural dialogue through art and learning.

The museum’s location within Education City is part of a broader strategy by Qatar to position its cultural investments as a model of geopolitical capital and soft power.

The museum spans more than 3,000 square meters and combines original works, archival materials, multimedia installations, and spaces for reflection and dialogue.

As a living, inspirational institution, the museum aims to attract repeat visitors and strengthen Doha’s status as a premier destination for contemporary art and cultural tourism.

TIME highlights the museum’s role in engaging with South Asia, the Arab world, and the Global South, showcasing works like Seeroo fi al ardh and other pieces that connect Husain’s legacy with the region.

Opened in November 2025, the museum celebrates Maqbool Fida Husain by presenting over 150 works across media and emphasizes cross-cultural dialogue through immersive experiences.

The museum’s architecture is built to reflect Husain’s vision, offering a living gallery where public artworks and interactive exhibits articulate his connections to diverse heritages.

The project includes a holistic approach where art, architecture, and curation create an accessible space for discovery within Qatar’s cultural ecosystem.
