NVIDIA's AI Supercomputer Revolutionizes U.S. Naval Operations with Advanced Cybersecurity and Weather Modeling
July 22, 2026
The DGX GB300 includes 36 NVIDIA Grace CPUs and 72 NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra GPUs, integrated into NPS’s existing high-performance computing environment to enable large-scale AI applications.
Implementation will emphasize controlled access to ensure scalable, responsible use as researchers begin applying the system to challenging naval problems.
Capt. Michael Owen highlighted potential military applications, including large-scale logistics optimization and cybersecurity modeling to anticipate threats in network traffic.
The system is expected to advance meteorology and oceanography modeling with higher-resolution, localized simulations beyond typical 50-kilometer grids.
NVIDIA donated the DGX GB300 AI supercomputer to the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation, marking the first AI supercomputer launch within the U.S. military, with Vertiv, DDN, and VAST Data providing infrastructure and deployment support.
The system was unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony and arises from a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between NPS and NVIDIA established in December 2024.
Initial deployment will manage demand carefully as the system comes online, while enabling exploration of more complex, real-world problems reflecting operational fleet challenges.
NPS officials acknowledge expected limited immediate demand but anticipate the platform will support tackling complex, real-world problems faced by the operational fleet.
Primary use cases encompass weather modeling, oceanic and operations research, cybersecurity, disaster resilience, and response planning, accelerating data-to-knowledge translation for naval operations.
NPS leadership stressed that technology alone doesn’t guarantee advantage; enduring leadership excellence requires education, intellectual capacity, and responsible AI use by trained personnel.
Leaders emphasized that military education must include understanding, ethical application, and strategic advantage from AI, preparing future commanders to evaluate and responsibly employ these technologies.
NPS aims to prepare leaders to understand and responsibly employ AI technologies to support national security objectives.
