More than 500 firefighters have been on the ground for 11 days to contain the Cairngorms wildfire, prompting evacuations in Nethy Bridge and nearby areas, with ground efforts continuing even though officials say it is no longer a major incident.

The Scottish Government and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service say they already have sufficient resources and welcomed ongoing support while managing the response.

Aerial water-dropping was initially sought from the MoD; as conditions improved, SFRS reported that more than 75 firefighters remained on site with three helicopters supporting water bombing.

First Minister John Swinney explained that the UK government’s request for aerial firefighting could not be met because the MoD does not possess such assets in the UK, but alternative support was offered.

Swinney noted the MoD’s lack of aerial firefighting assets in the UK and said alternatives from the UK government were considered.

The First Minister confirmed no UK aerial firefighting assets were provided, with the government instead offering other forms of assistance.

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting stressed the armed forces are ready to assist emergencies, with Chinook helicopters and standby battalions available to deploy if needed.

Streeting highlighted heavy-lift Chinooks and standby battalions as part of a constant readiness to coordinate with ground teams.

The defence secretary said military assets could be mobilised as needed in support of the firefighting effort and in coordination with ground crews.

The Scottish Government continues to assess all options for extra resources, with extensive support from the SFRS and other partners, while the UK government’s offer was to explore every avenue.

The UK government offered military support, including Chinook helicopters and standby personnel, after Scotland’s justice secretary requested help to tackle the Cairngorms wildfire.

Scottish Justice Secretary initially doubted military help would be available but later confirmed resources could be deployed after coordinating with the Defence Secretary and Wes Streeting.
