Venezuela Proposes Using Seized UK Gold for Earthquake Relief Amid Rising Death Toll
July 9, 2026
Interim President Delcy Rodríguez proposes using blocked overseas assets, including about 30 tonnes of Venezuelan gold held at the Bank of England, to fund earthquake relief and reconstruction after the deadly quakes.
The death toll from the earthquakes has risen to 3,811 with 16,740 injuries, 86,794 families assisted, and 17,907 people left homeless as of early July 2026.
Venezuela has long sought access to its gold abroad, with prior refusals by London and evolving U.S. policy toward Caracas since 2021, as sanctions collide with humanitarian needs.
The plan specifically targets using seized gold and other blocked assets to fund relief and rebuilding in the wake of the June 24 double earthquake.
The UN’s humanitarian chief requested $296 million to aid about 1.3 million people for six months as relief efforts continue across the affected areas.
