Etsy Cuts 12% of Workforce in Restructuring, Launches $2 Billion Stock Buyback
August 6, 2026
Optimists see potential for higher revenue and earnings by 2029, while concerns linger about whether AI and app improvements will sufficiently boost buyer engagement and marketing efficiency during the transition.
Etsy is cutting about 220 roles, roughly 12% of its workforce, primarily in product and engineering, as part of a restructuring to simplify the organization and position the company for future growth.
The cuts are framed as a byproduct of streamlining, with the company stressing ongoing investment in the business, hiring in areas aligned with long-term strategy, and noting that AI was not the driver of the layoffs.
CEO Patel Goyal aims for a leaner, more focused organization to outmaneuver competitors and drive sustained growth, with results expected in coming quarters.
In tandem with the restructuring, Etsy announced a board-approved stock repurchase program allowing up to $2 billion of buybacks to return capital to shareholders.
The move is part of a broader push to optimize operations and tailor the organization to individual and product-focused needs, according to leadership.
Etsy’s Q2 results showed improving transaction activity but cautious buyer demand, with GMV rising 7.5% to $2.58 billion and revenue up 6.2% to $668.3 million; active buyers slipped 0.4% to around 87 million, and margins expanded.
For the full year, Etsy lifted its GMV guidance to a mid-single-digit growth range, with Q3 GMV guidance above the street and revenue beating expectations for the quarter.
Analysts view the turnaround as a higher-stakes push toward execution and capital returns, with focus on growth momentum, product velocity, and efficient cash deployment.
The expanded buyback comes with a weaker near-term outlook due to the restructuring and ongoing trends in GMV and buyer activity, creating a trade-off for investors between returning capital now and preserving flexibility.
The restructuring reflects broader retail-tech cost pressures amid uneven consumer spending and intensified online competition.
