The Australian Ballet will bring back Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella to the stage after a 47-year absence, as part of a program that blends old and new works.

Season highlights include the Australian premiere of Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Mayerling in Melbourne, Cinderella returning for the first time in 47 years (premiering in Adelaide before touring), and the contemporary work Kunstkamer, a collaboration between renowned choreographers.

Artistic Director David Hallberg emphasizes the breadth and heart of storytelling, with performances enhanced by live orchestras and a mix of iconic and contemporary music.

A reimagined Swan Lake, premiered in 2023, will receive tweaks in set and costume design and ongoing evolution to stay relevant for today’s audiences.

The season is supported by philanthropic donors and partners, including Telstra and Lexus Australia, enabling extensive productions and touring.

Melbourne audiences will see the company return to the Ian Potter State Theatre (now refurbished and renamed), enabling bolder programming and addressing budget challenges.

Beyond mainstage, Storytime Ballet, On Tour programs to regional communities, and ongoing Education and Outreach initiatives will continue across Australia.

Season 2027 is described as one of the company’s biggest and boldest, featuring grand-scale storytelling, Australian premieres, classic revivals, and contemporary works across five main productions.

Kunstkamer, a non-narrative contemporary work with diverse music, will return due to audience demand and ongoing updates to its music selections.

Five mainstage productions include a reimagined Swan Lake, the Melbourne return to the refurbished Ian Potter State Theatre, and the 50-year milestone of Swan Lake in the repertoire.

Hallberg describes season 2027 as the company’s return to full capacity and ambition, aiming to spread the repertoire across the season and showcase the company’s growth and capabilities.

Swan Lake remains a cornerstone, with a long history for the company and significant production details, including extensive costumes and fabric, supported by major foundations.
