Brisbane's Queen’s Wharf Takes City Council to Court Over $30 Million Rates Dispute
September 8, 2026
Brisbane's Queen’s Wharf owner, the Destination Brisbane Consortium, has taken the Brisbane City Council to court to contest a multimillion-dollar unpaid rates bill.
More information will be provided as the legal proceedings unfold.
Deputy Mayor Fiona Cunningham argued the council’s rating decisions reflect high service levels and the substantial land value of the development, noting a multibillion-dollar project shouldn’t be taxed like a suburban business or family home.
The case was filed with the Supreme Court of Queensland, with a preliminary hearing set for December 4.
Queen’s Wharf is a $3.6 billion integrated resort, including a casino, luxury hotels, about 2,000 apartments, restaurants and retail outlets, with a rating category created specifically for it in 2023.
Destination Brisbane Consortium is a joint venture between Chow Tai Fook Enterprises and Far East Consortium; the consortium has not commented.
Brisbane City Council estimates the outstanding amount at about $30 million.
The dispute centers on land valuations and mounting debt, with rates unpaid since Queen’s Wharf opened.
