Four Little Libraries have been installed along Sunderland’s seafront to encourage borrowing, exchanging, or replacing books while offering views of the sea.

The project aligns with 2026 as the National Year of Reading, aiming to boost reading across the UK.

A treasure hunt event called Look For the Book will take place on October 3, with hidden copies between Roker and Seaburn for visitors to discover and keep.

Community response has been described as brilliant by Roberta Redecke of Sunderland BID, who notes the initiative is a simple, engaging way to enhance seafront visits through reading.

Each library case has been turned into a unique artwork by Su Devine of Sunderland's Art Cafe, with support from the National Literacy Trust.

The libraries are located at The Seaburn Inn, The Tram Shelter, Adventure Sunderland, and the Marina, organized by the Seafront Volunteer Group and Sunderland Seafront BID.
