Google Revamps Android with Call Casting and Instant Hotspot Features
July 29, 2024
Google has rolled out an update that simplifies the transfer of calls and sharing of Wi-Fi hotspots across Android devices.
This update introduces two new features, Call casting and internet sharing, which were first announced at the Google I/O event in May.
Call casting allows users to move calls between nearby devices signed into the same Google account, currently utilizing Google Meet.
The instant hotspot feature enables automatic sharing of hotspot access among Android phones, tablets, and Chromebooks without the need for password entry.
This update also allows for automatic connection to shared hotspots, enhancing user convenience.
Internet sharing facilitates hotspot access sharing between devices signed into the same Google Account, requiring Bluetooth and device location to be enabled.
However, the internet sharing feature is not available on Samsung devices, which instead offer a similar function called auto-hotspot.
Users can access these new features by navigating to Settings > Google > Devices and Sharing > Cross-device services to create a device group.
The device group can include phones, tablets, and Chromebooks, allowing for seamless sharing of calls and hotspots.
Overall, this update enhances Android's capabilities, making it more akin to Apple's Handoff feature and improving the user experience.
These features are available on devices running Android 11 or higher with Google Play services version 24.28.34, which is currently in beta testing.
