On November 29, 2024, Apple unveiled a new family of M4 chips alongside updated models of the iMac, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro.

Looking ahead, Apple plans to release several new products featuring the M4 chips, including new MacBook Air models in the first half of 2025, an M4 Ultra Mac Studio by mid-2025, and a new Mac Pro by late 2025.

Simultaneously, the company has initiated development on the next-generation M5 chips, placing production orders with TSMC.

The upcoming M5 chip will leverage an enhanced ARM architecture and utilize a 3-nanometer manufacturing process, marking a significant improvement over the M3 and M4 chips.

Although Apple considered a more advanced 2-nanometer process for the M5 chip, it ultimately opted against it due to cost concerns.

The M5 chip is expected to enhance capabilities in Neural Engine tasks, focusing on artificial intelligence and Apple Intelligence applications.

Additionally, the M5 will incorporate a new System On Integrated Chip technology designed to improve thermal management and minimize electrical leakage, which could lead to better performance and efficiency.

However, significant redesigns for products featuring the M5 chip may not occur until 2026, when Apple is expected to transition from miniLED to OLED technology.

The initial products anticipated to debut with the M5 chip include the iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, and Apple Vision Pro, likely launching in fall 2025.
