Apple Shifts iPhone Production to India: Tata and Foxconn Lead Expansion
May 12, 2025
Apple is shifting its supply chain strategy, with CEO Tim Cook announcing that India will become the primary manufacturing hub for iPhones sold in the US.
In a strategic move earlier this year, Tata Electronics acquired a controlling 60% stake in Pegatron Technology India, further solidifying its role in Apple's global value chain after previously acquiring Wistron's operations.
Other major Apple suppliers, including Foxconn and Jabil, are also ramping up their operations in India, with Foxconn investing in mobile assembly lines and Jabil increasing production of AirPods casings.
Following a fire incident in September 2024 that temporarily disrupted operations, Tata Electronics has restored its production capacity to around 50,000 enclosures at its Hosur plant.
Now that it has regained its pre-fire capacity, Tata Electronics is looking to further enhance production.
As part of its expansion efforts, Tata Electronics plans to double its iPhone casing production capacity at the Hosur facility from 50,000 to nearly 100,000 units ahead of Apple's September product launch.
This expansion is part of Phase II of the Hosur facility's development and is expected to be completed before Apple's annual product unveilings.
The completion of this expansion aligns with Apple's increasing focus on India as a manufacturing hub, with a target set for September 2025.
Industry insiders view this expansion as indicative of a growing Indo-Apple alliance, signaling a significant shift in manufacturing dynamics.
