India's First AI Language Model 'BharatGen' Launched to Revolutionize Multilingual Communication
June 2, 2025
The initiative, supported by the Department of Science and Technology, aims to provide ethical, inclusive, and multilingual AI solutions across India's diverse linguistic landscape.
On June 2, 2025, the Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launched 'Bharat Gen', India's first indigenously developed AI-based Multimodal Large Language Model (LLM) designed specifically for Indian languages.
BharatGen, announced in October 2024, is recognized as the world's first government-funded multimodal LLM project, focusing on creating efficient and inclusive AI solutions for India's diverse linguistic landscape.
Key features of BharatGen include its multilingual and multimodal architecture, the use of indigenously built datasets, an open-source framework, and the promotion of a Generative AI research ecosystem in India.
BharatGen is developed under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems and is implemented through 25 Technology Innovation Hubs, with four upgraded to Technology Translational Research Parks.
The summit gathered key dignitaries, including government officials, industry leaders, and academics, highlighting the collaborative effort to advance India's AI ecosystem.
The event showcased over 3,000 Agri-tech startups, illustrating the reach of innovation beyond metropolitan areas, with notable success stories like lavender cultivation in Jammu & Kashmir.
Dr. Singh highlighted the potential of AI-powered telemedicine services, where AI doctors can communicate fluently in a patient's native language, thereby enhancing trust and care in remote areas.
He emphasized the role of Generative AI in grassroots governance, particularly through the integration of multilingual feedback systems into citizen engagement platforms like CPGRAMS.
India's advancements in AI, including the CPGRAMS grievance redressal system, are being recognized globally as benchmarks, with other countries studying the model for potential implementation.
This initiative is part of a broader INR 10,372 crore IndiaAI Mission, which aims to spur AI innovation and support emerging AI startups in India, projected to become a $17 billion market by 2030.
At the summit, the Generative AI Hackathon 2025 was launched to engage youth in solving real-world challenges using AI, providing mentorship and funding opportunities.
