Collier County Boosts Emergency Response with High-Tech NG911 System Amidst Nationwide Funding Hurdles
July 20, 2025
Collier County, Florida, has upgraded its emergency response capabilities by implementing a high-tech Next Generation 911 (NG911) system that allows callers to send texts and videos directly to dispatchers, significantly enhancing response times.
RapidSOS CEO Michael Martin highlighted the importance of modern technology in improving 911 services, especially during recent emergencies like flooding in Texas, emphasizing the critical role of updated systems.
Across the U.S., response times vary greatly due to the lack of a uniform emergency system, with many of the over 6,000 emergency communication centers still relying on outdated technology, which hampers efficiency.
Collier County’s emergency centers operate 24/7 with 61 full-time and three part-time staff members, utilizing data from RapidSOS to improve response efforts during crises.
The county has established partnerships with other regions, including Charleston, South Carolina, as backup 911 support, ensuring continuity during system failures or disasters.
Sheriff Kevin Rambosk and communications director Bob Finney have led efforts over the past decade to upgrade Collier County’s emergency response technology, emphasizing that faster response times can save lives.
Legislation in North Carolina, enacted in 2017, provided funding for NG911 systems, which proved vital during Hurricane Helene by enabling call rerouting from impacted areas to unaffected centers.
Covering approximately 2,030 square miles, Collier County is prone to hurricanes, making the advanced NG911 system crucial for effective emergency management in this hurricane-prone region.
During Hurricane Helene in September 2024, Collier County demonstrated its preparedness by offering to assist Leon County with emergency calls, showcasing the collaborative capabilities enabled by the NG911 system.
Despite the critical importance of NG911 systems, funding remains a challenge, as there is currently no federal support or oversight, which complicates efforts to modernize emergency response infrastructure nationwide.
