Microsoft has begun rolling out lightweight taskbar apps for Microsoft 365 users on Windows 11, enhancing productivity and accessibility.

The apps will be automatically installed if Microsoft 365 apps are present on a Windows 11 system, although IT admins have the option to disable this feature.

The People app provides a browsable organizational chart and allows users to initiate Microsoft Teams messages or calls, and send emails without opening Outlook or Teams.

This rollout reflects Microsoft's strategy to integrate 365 services more seamlessly into Windows 11, minimizing the need to open full applications for quick tasks.

The Microsoft 365 companion apps, which include tools for quick access to contacts, file searches, and calendars, are being made available to business users starting in August 2025.

These apps were first announced at the Ignite conference in November 2024 and have been in beta testing prior to their general availability release this month for all business users.

The File Search companion app enables users to search for Microsoft 365 files by name, author, or keywords across OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook from the taskbar.

This second application allows users to quickly access files, preview them before opening, and includes sharing and filtering options.

The integration of these apps is anticipated to improve efficiency and collaboration in daily business operations.

The Calendar app offers a condensed view of the Microsoft 365 calendar, allowing users to check events, search appointments, and join meetings directly from the taskbar.

Additionally, the Calendar app integrates scheduling features, enabling users to create events, set reminders, and manage their tasks seamlessly across devices.
